The Magic of Regional Cinema: Showcasing fine acting skills, fresh cast and refreshing ideas

When it comes to cinema, we often associate it with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the grandeur of Bollywood. However, there is a treasure trove of films showcasing the regional parts of different countries and sometimes in regional and unpolished languages, that showcase the true essence of storytelling and acting. These movies not only entertain but also provide a unique cultural experience that is often overlooked. I was amazed to experience some of the best cinema I have watched, by these movies. Once again, there are more that what is written here, but for now we will stick to the latest beauties I saw. Unearthing these hidden gems, these movies are sometimes (more often than not) made on a smaller budget but are not lacking in quality or talent. In fact, many regional films have garnered critical acclaim and have won prestigious awards at international film festivals, one of which will be discussed here as well.

One of the defining characteristics of regional cinema is the emphasis on storytelling and character development. These movies delve deep into the lives of their characters, exploring their emotions, struggles, and triumphs. one can easily decipher the overall mood setting of the films where the cities or places these movies are shot becoming a background actor in themselves. The actors in regional cinema are known for their ability to bring these characters to life with their impeccable acting skills. These actors bring a rawness and authenticity to their performances that is hard to find in big-budget films. They are not bound by the constraints of commercial cinema and have the freedom to experiment with their craft.

1. Amar Singh Chamkila - India

What a refreshing blast of cinematic experience I had watching this film, words cannot be enough to describe! Released recently, it is Imtiaz Ali's one of the finest directed movies, where the art of showing the story and biography of this very controversial artist has been explored. I was amazed by the emotions I felt during watching it. The use of real life images side by side to the movie scenes, telling one at every single point how real it all was, the rawness that is brought by the actors on screen, the description and explanation of different words spoken in regional songs side by side; there is not even a single place where this director is missing or making it difficult for the viewer to relate and FEEL. Director Imtiaz Ali is known for excellent filmmaking but with this film, I believe that he has reached another height of making the best possible cinematic experience for his viewers. This film not only showcases fine acting skills and the life of this particular person, but also tells stories that are deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of a particular region. The movie provides a glimpse into the lives of people from a different background, exploring their struggles, aspirations, and unique perspectives, challenging the societal norms and shedding light on important issues.

It is fresh, crisp, backed by very powerful music choices and fine acting skills. Diljit Dosanjh shines in this film bringing fineness to the raw character he portrays. the live sequences of the songs sung by both the actors during acting and playing the scenes portrays a very realistic view of the times like that and the lives like those. I very much enjoyed the song "Ishq Mitaye" and the overall score by A.R. Rehman is on point. It is a beautiful gift to viewers like us, story-telling and performances like this. Give yourself a fresh whiff of this cinematic experience and leave everything to watch it right now! You can see the trailer here!

2. Beyond the infinite two minutes - Japan

This movie gave me that kind of experience that one keeps on looking forward to get again and again. You know that feeling when you search on Google with a tagline of 'movies like ......' because you want to experience the same feeling again? Yes, I am talking about that feeling. It isn't long, and once you get into the groove of the quirky storyline, you understand perfectly why. Searching upon it i came to know that it was firstly screened during the time of Covid so had only 12 viewers but later on it moved to international film festivals as well. And my God, what an experience it is! It is a sci-fi film that has been entirely shot in one cafe in Japan with some 7-8 artists. It is not scientific, doesn't present you with a lot of theories of 'what-ifs'; it just lets you explore with the characters who are also exploring as we go ahead in the film. They are also novices and noobs and one can most definitely become a part of their group in doing what they are doing. Here's the trailer!

Directed by Junta Yamaguchi, and being his directional debut, this film has made me curious about the director and I want to experience and explore more of his films in the future. Again, it is fresh, different than your regular films and movies and is a treat to the brain. The acting displayed by the artists is intricate and thoroughly enjoyable to make you very well understand that they are theater artists. It provides a glimpse into a different culture but mainly lays so many questions and actions in front of you that you cannot dare but think. The main idea or theme has been portrayed in a whimsical and 'Oh! I don't know what is happening now' manner that you would not want to miss a single scene, line or second of this film whatsoever!

3. Tout le monde aime Jeanne - France

Do I need to say more? If everybody loves Jeanne, it is sure for the viewer also to if not love her, definitely find her interesting. Directed by Céline Devaux and starring Blanche Gardin, who is a renowned comedian, this movie gave me a slight 'Lizzie McGuire' feeling. the story is simple, but her life is definitely not! This is a comic film with on point situations created, amazing acting and comic timing and a grown up, relatable content. I don't want to say or tell more, but you have to watch a film like this in a while to rejuvenate and maybe, look at your own life situations and difficulties in a whimsical and comic manner. It talks about important things and puts a different take on mental health and well being of an individual and gives a directive message on how people can help each other. Maybe the take-away is not to take things as seriously as one does; this one is a lemon soda on a hot summer day for a film/ cinema viewer. Give it a watch and here's the trailer for you!

4. Perfect Days - Japan

This movie has been getting a lot of rave reviews and gained popularity in the mass media, thanks to its Oscars nomination. It's a slice of life and needless to say, I was mesmerized by the ability of the director and the actor to tell the story of a common man like you and me, from such a poignant manner that the rhythm of life itself becomes a part of the narration. There are a few dialogues by the central character, fewer that the images he takes in the camera throughout the film, or the dreams he has. But Koji Yakusho, the brilliant actor for whom it is not new that his work supersedes everything else in the film, does an exceptional job with this one. Japan's architecturally designed and very modern toilets, some old books, upbeat music stored in cassettes and an old van have their own supporting roles to play. This movie is a delight to watch and is not for the person with a lower level of patience. You go with the flow of life of Hirayama (Yakusho) and float like him by the end of the film. It's like being there as a witness of his being.

This movie gave me so many moments to ponder and think about, of my life and of me. It is rare to find movies like these being internationally accepted and recognized as well because off lately, it is difficult to find movies like this appreciated up front. This one's a gem of a film and cinema and acting at its best! Give it a go for a breath of fresh air and something to think about later. Or at least, observe! Find the trailer here!

5. Wild Tales - Spain/ Argentina

I am late to see this one, but what a fantastic watch! It has an interesting concept as a film. It comprises of six short stories around the theme of 'Revenge'. Directed and written by Damián Szifron, this Oscar nominated Brazil anthology has a cast comprising of some of the most critically acclaimed and recognized actors of the Argentine cinema. I will not say more, but if you are a cinema loved, this one's a must watch. Go give it a try to blow your mind and make you think as to 'what the hell is happening'! See the trailer here!

Regional cinema is a testament to the fact that great storytelling and fine acting skills can transcend language and cultural barriers. These movies offer a refreshing break from the formulaic plots and predictable performances often seen in mainstream cinema. These films are a cinematic experience worth exploring.
